Quantity Surveyor Jobs

How to Enter

Professionals looking to move into a Quantity Surveyor job will need to have either a National Diploma in Quantity Surveying or a Bachelor of Construction, and have a detailed understanding of New Zealand’s local by-laws, building regulations and legislation. Any experience within the residential or commercial construction industry or work involving calculations or accounting will be hugely beneficial. However, the personal requirements for such a role can be any of the following:

  • Excellent planning and organisation skills
  • High ethics and honesty
  • Has an inquisitive and creative mind
  • Can work well under pressure and to tight deadlines


Typical Responsibilities

A Quantity Surveyor may do some or all the following responsibilities:

  • Analysing building plans
  • Measuring and estimating material and labour costs
  • Reporting costs to Construction Manager
  • Reporting ongoing costs as project progresses and working with management to keep project within budget
  • Helping with value management, such as a comparing building costs to similar buildings



There are plenty of career prospects for a skilled Quantity Surveyor. With a few years’ experience, a candidate could move into more a senior Quantity Surveyor role or specialise in strategic or commercial management. Alternatively, professionals could decide to become a contractor or start their own consultancy business.


Salary Range

Entry level: 45K – 70K per annum (NZD)

Experienced: 90K – 130K per annum (NZD)
