Intermediate Planner Jobs

How to Enter

Your ability to become an Intermediate Planner in New Zealand will largely come down to your level of accreditation. Most employers will expect Intermediate Planners to hold Intermediate Membership with the New Zealand Planning Institute (NZPI). To accomplish that, you will need:

  • To have completed a NZPI recognised planning degree and at least two years’ work experience in planning
  • To be currently working in the field of planning
  • To commit to completing, or have already completed, three core Continuing Professional Development courses:
    • Planning for Maori Values: An Update
    • Ethics for Planners
    • Plan Making series or Resource Consents series
    • Two NZPI members to sponsor your application (one must be a Full member)

 

Typical Responsibilities

The role of an Intermediate Planner can include any of the following:

  • Planning buildings, streets, car parks, recreational parks, reserves, facilities and utilities
  • Acquiring resource and planning consents
  • Analysing the development of residential, environmental and commercial areas
  • Researching and reporting the effects of proposed developments, particularly on the environment
  • Collecting and analysing social, environmental and economic data
  • Presenting reports to Government, local councils, companies and clients

 

Progression

Intermediate Planners can progress their careers by moving into more senior-level roles within the Civil Planning and Surveying industries, such as becoming a Principle Town Planner or Senior Planner. Alternatively, they can move into Civil Infrastructure and specialise further in Town, Urban or Recreational Planning, or even Policy Administration.

 

Salary Range

61K – 103K per annum (NZD)
