How to Enter

To become a Driver, you need to hold a valid driving licence for the vehicle, including size, you intend to drive. First, you’ll need to hold a full car driving licence so you can be eligible to get a Class 2 learner’s licence. Once you have a Class 2 licence, you can to work towards acquiring other vehicle classes. Drivers of heavy trucks that transport hazardous materials or goods need to complete a National Certificate in Commercial Road Transport as well.


Typical Responsibilities

The typical responsibilities of a Driver can consist of the following:


  • Driving light or heavy delivery vehicles
  • Planning delivery schedules and routes with Manager
  • Supervising and helping with unloading and loading of vehicle
  • Lifting and carrying goods
  • Ensuring all loads of safely secured
  • Recording deliveries made and keep log book up-to-date
  • Ensuring delivery vehicles, including tyres and brakes, are operating properly
  • Maintaining delivery vehicle and reporting problems to Mechanics


Progression

Many Drivers can decide to take their careers into their own hands, buy their own vehicle and become self-employed contractors. Alternatively, Drivers can also work their way up to management and employ several drivers in their own fleet. Other options for Drivers include specialising in particular areas, such as Distribution or Haulage Management or Transport and Logistics Planning.


Salary Range

30K – 48K per annum (NZD)
