​How to Enter

To due to the complex nature of this role, you may need a degree or diploma in Interior Design, Spatial Design, or Interior Architecture to secure an Interior Designer role in New Zealand. In some cases, employers may also accept candidates with degrees in related areas such as Architecture or Industrial Design.


The personal requirements of an Interior Designer can include any of the following:


  • Imaginative and creative
  • Highly accurate with a great eye for detail
  • Excellent communicator
  • Able to inspire confidence in their clients
  • Able to take criticism onboard


Typical Responsibilities

A typical day for an Interior Designer could include any of the following job responsibilities:


  • Discussing and understanding clients’ requirements
  • Designing the interior of buildings like rooms, shops, and residential and leisure spaces
  • Planning lighting, air-conditioning and communication cabling
  • Preparing drawings, samples and decorating instructions
  • Helping with hiring tradespeople
  • Designing and ordering furniture and fittings
  • Working with Architects and contractors to deliver clients’ requirements


Progression

Interior Designers can progress their careers by moving into a management position or start their own design business. Alternatively, they can also choose to specialise in Commercial or Contract Interior Design, or Residential Interior Design.


Salary Range

Entry: 45K – 65K per annum (NZD)

Senior (5+ years): 65K – 95K per annum (NZD)
