To improve your chances of securing a role as a Leading Hand in the Trade & Industrial sector in New Zealand, it’s recommended to have several years’ experience in a supervisory role. Holding a trade qualification, such as Certificate in Carpentry, can also be greatly beneficial.
The typical responsibilities of a Leading Hand can include some or all of the following:
Assisting, guiding and training factory or work site personnel
Managing work site or factor in Manager’s absence
Conducting quality control of work
Maintaining factory or site equipment and machinery
Providing administration and training functions
Ensuring Health & Safety policies are being adhered to
Given enough experience, a Leading Hand could progress their career into management and take on a Site Manager, Factory Manager or General Manager role. They could also choose to further specialise in their field and work as a consultant or specialist.
