How to Enter

To increase your chances of becoming an Electrical Fitter in New Zealand, it is recommended that you complete a New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Trade) (Level 4) and specialise in Fitting and Machining in your final year.


The personal requirements of a Mechanical Fitter will often include the following:


  • Responsible and safety-conscious
  • Able to follow instructions
  • Very accurate and patient
  • Great communicator
  • Able to make sound judgements
  • Able to do heavy lifting, work at height and in confined spaces
  • Can work independently or as part as a team


Typical Responsibilities

Mechanical Fitters can expect to do any of the following tasks:


  • Manufacturing, installing and maintaining new production machinery and equipment
  • Carrying out maintenance checks on machines and diagnosing faults
  • Cleaning and repairing machines and machine parts
  • Deciding on suitable materials and working methods
  • Measuring and marketing out materials for cutting
  • Setting and operating machines to cut and shape the materials
  • Checking measurements and welding parts together
  • Testing finished products


Progression

With experienced, Mechanical Fitters can progress into supervisory or managerial roles, or move into specialise areas such as Product Design, Management or Technical Sales. Maintenance Engineers may also be able to move to other areas of Mechanical Engineering including Maintenance Engineers, Mechanical Machinists, General Engineers, Toolmakers or Metal Formers.


Salary Range

Entry: 32K – 40K per annum (NZD)

Experienced: 40K – 80Kper annum (NZD)​
