How to Enter

When hiring a Production Manager, many New Zealand employers will be looking for candidates who have previous working experience in a manufacturing plant in a supervisor or managerial role. In addition, some businesses may prefer people with relevant tertiary qualifications.

Typical Responsibilities

Production Managers may be expected to do some or all of the following job responsibilities:

Deciding production goals and timetables
Setting and reporting production budgets
Identifying what materials, supplies, machinery and equipment are needed to meet production goals
Managing suppliers and vendors
Evaluating production processes and creating reports
Maintaining, testing, improving and deciding when to repair or replace equipment and machinery
Developing new production processes
Developing, training and assisting factory staff
Meeting and liaising with clients and customers
Overseeing factory safety standards and risks

Progression

Production Managers may choose to take up a similar position in another industry or specialise further within Production Management, such as Manufacturing Technology, Quality Control or Health & Safety.
