How to Enter

Whilst there are no specific strict educational entry requirements for Sales Engineers roles, as most of the crucial skills can be taught on the job, many New Zealand employers prefer candidates who have a relevant degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology. That said, having previous sales experience could greatly boost your position as a great candidate.


Typical Responsibilities

The day-to-day responsibilities of a Sales Engineer can include the following:


  • Identifying customer and client needs
  • Building long-term relationships with a portfolio of clients and customers
  • Provides detailed technical information on engineering products and services
  • Planning and conducting sales calls for new business
  • Preparing cost estimations for customers
  • Acquiring customer and client sign off for new business contracts
  • Maintaining technical engineering knowledge through workshops and training courses
  • Preparing sales reports by collecting and analysing sales data
  • Ensuring sales procedures and processes adhere to existing and new regulatory measures and legislation


Progression

For most Sales Engineers, the next logical step in their careers is to move into Sales Management by becoming a Team Leader or Sales Manager. Alternatively, due to their technical knowledge, Sales Engineers can also choose to become qualified Engineers in a vast array of industries.


Salary Range

Entry: 34K – 53K per annum (NZD)

Experienced: 53K – 80K per annum (NZD)
