What Will the Infrastructure Jobs Market Look Like This Year

May 11, 2021

For those working in the infrastructure sector, it can be difficult to know what kind of infrastructure jobs we can expect in the upcoming months. COVID-19 has turned the world upside down, but there is some good news for the upcoming months. 2021 is destined to be a brighter year than 2020. These are some of the trends that you should look out for.

General Contractors Will Pick Up the Slack

With infrastructure grinding to a halt in 2020, construction companies had to lay off a lot of their subcontractors, and since many of them are struggling financially, it will be difficult for them to hire back everyone right away. Although more and more subcontractors will be added to the payroll as time goes on, for the foreseeable future general contractors will pick up the slack.

This means that they might have to broaden their specialties and even pick up some new skills. It will also give general contractors a good perspective into what their subcontractors deal with on a day-to-day basis.

More Environmental Focus

Moving forward, we'll see a renewed focus on the environment. Globally, we're realizing that it's imperative to care for our planet, so infrastructure in 2021 will reflect that mission. You'll start to see a lot of environmentally-friendly material used, with more focus on maximizing natural light and heat through solar panelling and other implementations. Structures will also begin to utilize a lot more green space, with a renewed effort to make sure that they're existing in harmony with the environment.

Contractors may have to learn how to properly use different types of materials that deviate from their standard tools, so some education might be necessary to get everyone on the same page. The companies that switch to a greener solution will inevitably gain a better reputation for environmental stewardship than those who do not. If you want to stay one step ahead of the curve, this is a good way to do it.

Cleaner Conditions on the Job

Expect to see much cleaner conditions on the job. After a full year of the pandemic, cleaner conditions will be mandatory for any site. Masking will be common, and there will be plenty of places where you can sanitize your hands. Temperature screening may or may not be part of the equation too.

Each company will have to address the needs of a post-COVID world. This will inevitably lead to safer job sites and allow businesses to see where there were flaws in their practices, as well, simply because we will be looking at everything forensically to make sure that it is above board.
