Lead a Skilled Team in a Busy Fabrication and Manufacturing Environment

This opportunity is with a well-established Wellington-based engineering and manufacturing business with a strong reputation for quality, reliability and delivery.

Operating across New Zealand and international markets, the business designs and manufactures engineered products used in a range of industrial applications. With a growing workload and a commitment to continuous improvement, they are seeking an experienced Production Lead to help drive workshop performance and support the next stage of growth.

This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll be visible on the workshop floor, supporting the team, coordinating workflow and ensuring production is delivered safely, efficiently and to a high standard.

The Role

Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will lead a team working across fabrication, welding and manufacturing activities, ensuring production targets, quality standards and delivery commitments are consistently achieved.

This role combines practical workshop leadership with responsibility for workflow coordination, labour planning, resource allocation and continuous improvement. You will work closely with production planning, procurement and management to keep work moving through the workshop while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality and productivity.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead and support workshop personnel across fabrication, welding and manufacturing activities
  • Coordinate daily workflow and production priorities to meet customer delivery requirements
  • Allocate labour, equipment and resources to maximise workshop efficiency
  • Monitor workshop performance and contribute to productivity, quality and delivery targets
  • Ensure welding and fabrication work is completed safely and to required quality standards
  • Drive a strong health and safety culture through visible leadership and accountability
  • Coach, mentor and develop tradespeople and production staff
  • Work closely with planning and operations teams to ensure labour, materials and production priorities remain aligned
  • Identify and implement practical process improvements that improve workflow, quality and efficiency
  • Manage day-to-day production issues and resolve bottlenecks before they impact delivery
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing waste, rework and downtime

About You

You may currently be working as a:

  • Production Lead
  • Workshop Manager
  • Production Supervisor
  • Fabrication Supervisor
  • Welding Supervisor
  • Manufacturing Team Leader
  • Foreman

Most importantly, you'll bring experience leading people within a fabrication, welding, engineering or industrial manufacturing environment.

You will ideally have:

  • Proven experience leading workshop or production teams
  • Experience coordinating fabrication and welding activities within a manufacturing environment
  • Strong understanding of workshop workflow, productivity and quality requirements
  • The ability to organise work, allocate resources and maintain delivery performance
  • A practical, hands-on approach to problem solving and decision making
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to lead from the front
  • Commitment to health, safety and quality standards
  • Experience working with KPIs, production targets and continuous improvement initiatives

A trade background in welding, fabrication, fitting, machining or engineering would be highly regarded, although proven leadership experience within a similar manufacturing environment is equally important.
