To move into a Senior Architect job, professionals would first need to be registered with the New Zealand Registered Architects Board (NZRAB). The board usually requires applicants to do the following:
Registered Architects also need to undertake continuing professional development to maintain their registration.
In some circumstances, people who have a Master of Architecture (Professional) and extensive design experience in the building sector, can apply to become registered straight away. Once registered, most Architects would reach senior status after five or more years working.
Senior Architects can expect to do some or all of the following:
A Senior Architect can decide to move into more specialist areas including interior, urban, or sustainable design, conservation, community development, project management or planning. In the public sector, Senior Architects can often progress into management and policy roles.
